The H.E.R. Experience Live in Los Angeles

H.E.R. is quickly becoming one of my favorite musicians. I say ‘musician’ because she is truly a multi-talented tour de force in human form. Seeing her in concert at The Novo in DTLA only confirmed this. She can sing–effortlessly– make a guitar whine in the sweetest way and kick up a beautiful tune on the keyboard.

Words like ‘authentic’ and ‘soulful’ can easily be thrown around nowadays, but the 21-year-old embodies these words and more. I loved seeing how she commanded the stage in her own way. Her voice was her most powerful instrument, stirring up the venue and moving everyone to their feet. Although the concert started late, all of that was forgotten the moment she stepped on stage with her acoustic guitar, signature blackout shades, flowing black hair, and dope outfit.

I found a great spot in the balcony, close enough to still have a clear view up top in the middle section. Even though I found such a good seat for my solo-concert adventure, I barely sat down during her set. She had a stellar setlist from start to finish, moving seamlessly from song to song. When she sang “Avenue,” “Lights On,” “Best Part,” and other jams from her first album, I could barely keep my tone-deaf self from shouting along.

The concert was such a memorable experience. After her standout openers, Tone Stith and Bri Steves left the stage, H.E.R. came onto the stage behind a leaning screen. At first, with mild hesitation, I wondered if she would spend the whole concert behind the screen, then during “Carried Away,” her holograms materialized. She was her own band! Right there, my heart soared!

On twitter H.E.R. mentioned:

Last night in Los Angeles was crazy in the best way!

From the crowd at @TheNovoDTLA, performing with a hologram, the surprise plaque for over 1 billion streams and much more is a dream come true! THANK YOU! #IUTKHTour

It was a sold-out show and rightly so because seeing her live is worth any ticket price. Hearing her was like having her discography on full blast, with every note and heartfelt lyric sung right into your ears. Her voice sounded impeccable and even better live because we could see her get into the music.

I couldn’t stop listening to H.E.R. when I stumbled upon her song “Jungle” while listening to a playlist I can’t remember on Spotify. Unconsciously, it became my relaxation song. It just cultivated a sweet feeling in me. Steadily, my Spotify playlist was filled with her music. Seeing H.E.R. in concert simply made me even more excited to listen to her new work.

I couldn’t help but admire how she embraced her subtle sultriness. H.E.R. obviously holds a mystique to her presence and it was charming to see how fierce she could be without needing to wear a flashy outfit or even show her eyes. She was still so captivating. It was even better to see her move about the stage, getting hyped up as well as gliding over to the keyboard or standing behind an electric guitar.

When she had a moment to speak to the audience, H.E.R. thanked everyone in attendance for supporting her and “keeping it about the music.” She is one of the artists bringing back the significance of instrumentation and textured R&B with her rich voice, sentimental lyrics, and perfect production. I can’t wait to see how H.E.R. grows. The I Used To Know Her Tour is already a hit and I’m glad I had the chance to see her in my city. Most of all, I’ve never been more excited and curious to see how an artist will unfold in the future. Already nominated for 5 Grammy’s, H.E.R. is more than a promising rising star. I believe she’ll be honored for her craft and wholly remembered for her contributions to music in the future.
