Hugh Spa: A Place for Wellness & Body Positivity

The Wonder of Korean Spas

If you live in L.A. and haven’t been to a Korean Spa, you need to go–fast! A trip to the Korean Spa will have you feeling brand new and wonderfully familiar with yourself. Not only will your skin be as silky smooth as the day you were born, you will come back feeling empowered. The Korean Spa gives you a chance to take care of your body and realize just how beautiful you are.

There are quite a few spas in Koreatown, Los Angeles. Yet, one Wednesday evening I took a trip to my favorite spot, Hugh Spa. It is an all-women’s spa with great services and treatments. I’ve been a loyal spa-goer for a few years now and whenever I go, I feel renewed, comfortable, and often, my belly is full with amazing food from the Hugh Cafe.

Body Positivity

What I love most about Hugh Spa is that it is a judgment-free zone. On your first visit to the Korean Spa, be ready to shed your clothes! Korean spas are a safe space for feeling comfortable and in-tune with your body. It’s just a place where you happen to be naked! You can mostly find this in Hugh Spa’s shower room where you wash off, take a dip in the hot tub or when it’s time for your massage or body scrub. Otherwise, you can wear your robe. Everyone there is seeking to feel good, to relax and take care of themselves. Therefore, it’s normal to see all types of women — ethnicities and body types–from across Los Angeles.

“Inspired by the Korean word ‘hyu-ga’, which means to ‘take a break and throw all your troubles out the door’, Hugh Spa focuses on just that. We are a detox sanctuary, offering a variety of special amenities and services to satisfy your every detox need.” — Hugh Spa.

This is no joke or a throwaway statement. Whenever I go, I feel like I’ve detoxed physically and emotionally. When I went recently one glorious Wednesday evening, it hit me just how much I appreciate this haven of wellness and detoxing. It’s truly beautiful to see friends there or mothers and daughters who are just chatting, laughing and most of all relaxing. Seeing mothers and daughters, Black, Latina, Korean and more, is a reminder that we must take care of ourselves. How we feel, inside and out, matters. I believe at the Korean Spa, being comfortable in one’s body is naturally prioritized.

The Amenities

My favorite aspect of Hugh Spa is the many great rooms and services they offer to focus on your wellbeing. There are seven main rooms: the Shower Room, Jade Steam Sauna, the Charcoal Mud Clay Room, Himalayan Salt Room, Infrared Magnant Room, Ice Room, and the Oxygen Room. Wear you don’t have to do much else but lay down and soak up the health benefits. For example, my fav the Himalayan Salt Room holds 84 types of minerals that help invigorate your cells and draw out toxins, as well as help with fatigue, increase blood circulation and much more! Hugh Spa presents each room in steps with great details and insights on what each room does for your health. You can find more info here.

I often stay a few hours, chilling in the Himalayan Salt & Mineral bath, lounging in the Charcoal Mud Clay and more. Like me, you can make a pit stop at their cafe between rooms or as you’re waiting for your body care treatment.

They also have an amazing Body Scrub treatment, where they literally scrub the dead skin off of you. That’s how you get baby-soft skin. Also, you can bring your own scrub and body wash and work your way to smoother skin in their Shower Room. Whether you’re looking to just use their various rooms or make a massage appointment, you can make the most of your trip. You can find more details on Hugh Spa’s body care treatments here.

I hope you take a trip to Hugh Spa, maybe you’ll see me there dozing off in the Oxygen Room or Himalayan Salt room and even slurpin’ some ramyeon.

  1. Thank you for this blog. When I lived in the L.A. area I did go to a Korean Spa regularly. It was not the Hugh Spa. I definitely will plan to visit it on my next trip to L.A.
