Everything Spectacular About Deadpool 2 & the Awesome Domino

Deadpool 2 does not disappoint! The hilariousness continues with Deadpool’s pop culture references and fourth-wall-breaking quips. Not only is the film so damn funny, but the timing of the jokes were also so smart as well. Great attention was given to fans that love Marvel and DC Comics and those same fans who can be skeptical of what they’re watching.

Inside Deadpool 2

If I noticed something that was cliché or odd, Deadpool definitely noticed i.e. antihero Cable’s metal arm being similar to another metal-arm-man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Winter Soldier aka Bucky. Or even what the superpower of Black Tom Cassidy could be (cultural appropriation with those dreads?). Little moments like this really made the movie.

Along those lines, nothing is at all conventional with a Deadpool film, which is one of the reasons why it’s so fun to watch. Such as Russell’s prison wallet, Deadpool’s possible attraction to Colossus, and the nod to the LGBTQ community with superhero couple Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Yukio. As well, great new characters were introduced who had as much gravity to share the screen with the snarky mercenary Deadpool, if not steal the show.

In terms of translating comic book characters to the screen, Deadpool 2 took a welcomed risk with the character Domino. The character from the comics is stark white with straight hair and a black spot around her eye, yet Zazie Beetz’ Domino is basically the opposite. I was really happy that Zazie Beetz played the dynamic and very lucky superhero, it was so great to see her kicking ass and causing mayhem. Beetz is known for her role as Van from acclaimed FX show, Atlanta (which I adore)and Domino is a far cry from her character on the show.

The Significance of Zazie Beetz’s Domino

Like the women of Black Panther’s Wakanda and Thor Ragnarok’s Valkyrie, Domino is another character shaking up the comic book world showing the strength, beauty, and edgy style of Black women. For this heroine to be sure of herself, confident that her power of luck is indeed a superpower, all while being funny has even more complexity with Beetz portraying her. It’s so intriguing to see a Black female with the capacity to turn situations in her favor and carry an easy self-assurance about her. Domino had some of the best action sequences in the film, especially when she is the only other surviving member of the initial X-Force team. We learn a bit about her “cosmic” reason for being a part of X-Force, but it would be great to learn more about Domino in a future X-Force movie, another Deadpool film, or even her own film down the line. I for sure would love to know what she’s been up to before joining Deadpool.

Back to how unconventional Deadpool 2 is, some of my speculations (or wild hopes) are that we won’t see the last of the doomed initial X-Force team. Yes, they were perfect cameos, but it would be so great to see Terry Crews’ Bedlam and Bill Skarsgård’s Zeitgeist again. Maybe that’s just wishful thinking but if you saw the post-credits, it’s still possible that Deadpool went around and made some major changes, so maybe we won’t see the last of them…
