A Glimpse of ‘Afrofuture’ In The Changing Womxn Collective’s Second Issue

The Changing Womxn Collective just released their second issue of visual art, poetry, and pose. I had the wonderful opportunity to share my work! My poem “Afrofuture” was selected to feature in the online magazine’s second issue entitled, Black & Blooming

What’s In Black & Blooming?

Black & Blooming highlights primarily black artisans and the winners of their micro-grants. When they were calling for submissions in February, the Collective mentioned on their Instagram, Our theme is Black & Blooming, in honor of Black History Month. However, we wanted this space to depart from the mainstream celebration of “Black History Month” and rethink whom this month, despite its intentions, excludes and whose narratives it supports. So while we are taking this opportunity to honor Black womxn and femme artists and creators, we want to make it clear that celebrations of Black artistry and identity should not be contained in a singular, nationally-designated month.”

The issue is indeed celebrating Black creativity beyond the confines of a month. It celebrates Blackness as it lives and breathes by sharing photographs by artists like Sydney Holmes as well as poetry and prose by 40 writers!

This is Black history, present, and future, on Black womxn and femmes’ own terms.

About The Collective

What I really appreciate about the Changing Womxn Collective is how dedicated they are to sharing the voices of people of color, from all walks of life. From the editorial team to the work they produce and share, they stick to their word and mission. The Collective was created by Kinsale Hueston, a 19-year-old Diné (Nat’oh Dine’é Tachiini) poet “to create a digital space where womxn of color, especially Indigenous womxn, could share their art, writing, and stories on their own terms.”

I hope for their continued successful collaborations with talented people, and I hope you read their new issue!

Stay Strong, Hygenic, & Compassionate!
