A Day of Fun & Giving Back At The Culture + Friendship Festival

This weekend held loads of family fun and celebration at the Culture + Friendship Festival, in Marina del Rey. The festival took place at The Riveter on a sunny Saturday afternoon. It is the first of its kind and truly made a statement. As an event in celebration of families and children, the festival honored community and multicultural identity.

The Riveter was packed with an array of vendors and activities for attendees to enjoy. It must be noted that the event runners, Delia Douglas and Sonia Smith-Kang of MultiCulti Corner hosted an amazing festival overflowing with creative energy. There was no box unchecked, from the cotton candy machine to the stylish photo booth, goodie bags and prizes, mimosas and adorable entertainment. Sponsored by MultiCulti Corner and the likes of Mixed Chicks and Mixed Up Clothing, the festival offered products in haircare, children’s books, dolls and more.

Not only was the event one for family and celebration, but it was also about bridging community globally. The Culture + Friendship Festival was held in support of MASC to give toys and supplies to those affected by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

The Lovely Fashion Show

I had my share of fun, reverting back to childhood, if only for a moment at the festival. I definitely had a few flavors of cotton candy by Love Swirls and perused the marketplace. The highlight of the day had to be the beautiful fashion show which showcased the vibrant patterns and stylings of Mixed Up Clothing. Children young and small, confident and radiant, marched the runway. The young models were outfitted in African and ethnic-inspired prints, from dresses to shirts, with copper coiled crowns and accessories. What was truly lovely to see was how much every child embodied a sense of pride in themselves and the clothes they were wearing. They all exhibited their own individual flair which was accentuated by the clothes they wore.

You can expect the festival to only be better and better in the future. If you are looking for a wholesome family outing centered on acknowledging heritage, then the Culture + Friendship Festival is definitely one to watch out for.
